Renewable energy investment in rural America generates much more than electricity, it produces permanent jobs, too. Nowhere is this more evident than in a new partnership between Caithness Shepherds Flat, one of the world’s largest wind farms in north Gilliam and Morrow counties, and Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC), which in 2007 established the first wind technician training program on the West Coast. Supported by a 10-year, $250,000 financial commitment by Caithness Shepherds Flat, CGCC having the next generation of wind energy workers.

For renewable energy supporters, last week’s opening of the United States largest onshore wind farm in north-central Oregon, the Shepherds Flat facility is something to cheer about. Shepherds Flat will generate about 2 billion kilowatt hours (kWh)  annually, powering 235,000 homes and eliminating about 1.5 million (1,500,000,000) metric tons of carbon pollution. Again, cheers!

Did you notice that last weekend the largest onshore wind farm in America started operation in north-central Oregon? The 845 MW Shepherds Flat facility will generate an estimated 2 billion kWh each year — enough to power 235,000 homes. On top of that, this clean power will eliminate about 1.5 million metric tons of carbon pollution annually — the equivalent of taking
approximately 260,000 cars off the road.

Sustainable Business Oregon – October 18, 2012

Thanks to the giant Shepherds Flat wind farm, Oregon saw a significant jump in its installed wind energy capacity in the third quarter, contributing to the 1,833 megawatts of new wind power installed in the U.S. between July and September.

The final phases of the Shepherds Flat wind farm came online in September, adding another 333 megawatts of wind energy capacity to Oregon’s tally, according to the quarterly wind industry report published by the American Wind Energy Association.
